The Sign of Jonah

08 May
"throw me overboard"
he said
button-holing himself as the linchpin for the maelstrom
near to swamp the ship

praying to their teraphim
as the sailor's last ditch
they tossed jonah into the raging drink

for when the presence had told the seer
go to nineveh to preach
jonah, the boneheaded, turned the 180
towards tarshish

but a catch-net waited
a fitted-out big-mouth fish
swallowed the waterlogged
preacher

ferried into the bowels of the earth
in a fish's stomach
the first missionary
submarine ride

you can bet jonah prayed and puked
in that putrid air-bubble belly
stewing inside three days and three nights

the fish spat jonah up
on the beaches of nineveh
bleached translucent by stomach acid
looked like a ghosted angel
preached:
get the act together
or else

the ninevites sat up on their hind legs
and paid respect
covering themselves with sackcloth and ashes
as signs
of angst for their misdeeds
amending their ways
