In The Eyes

19 Apr
the baby eagle was now an earth bound orphan
for on the day of flight training
the nestling did not find its wings
spinning loony to the ground
the baby apex-predator of the sky
was now the hunted
a snuffling hungry bear was nearby

a crone walking with rheumatoid
knobby protrusions
and tall oaken hooked staff
happened upon the fuzzy eagle child
pointing a bony finger in the bear snout
it lumbered off

she lived in the forest as a hermit
(branded a witch by the town folk)
tended the young eagle until
with eight foot wingspan, took off

as it soared regal
spotted her wet eyes
streaming the bony cheeks
and one-tooth grin

full of respect-gratitude
for the forest hag
so simpatico to the the eagle's eye
but homely and rejected by her own

Such a lovely tale. It feels timeless.
