Feel the Daylight

Rene's formula doesn't work

I feel, thus I am

rationalizing away is tissue
scarring like the sarcophagus
inscribed with excuses

I perceive without apology
my ownership of the basswood leaves
their crunch, the chlorophyll sliding
down my throat the maple leaves of the northeast
spicy when chewed, speaking of the sun's
health-giving properties

began the morning with the thrill
of 2 tsp of apple cider vinegar mixed
into a cup of cold volcanic water

emptying the solar plexus of reactivity
that no longer defends me, or never did
off like flitting bats in the upstairs attic
when the daylight enters

dropping ceiling guano way too long
on the dark floor of my unfeeling past
