Kelly the Cat

12 Mar
The cat was named Kelly
An outdoor tortoiseshell of the '60s
lived on eight acres of untamed rural
homestead. As tough as the environment,
she fought dogs, cats, snakes, rats
and muskrats.

At about fourteen
lost an eye
in a sword fight with a nemesis.
The old was now hard to look at.

She just sprawled during the days
basking in the sun,
waiting for the final call.

A cadre of chipmunks surrounded
her bedraggled panting body.
She struggled
just to breathe. felt sorry for her
the chippies taunted mockingly
playing chicken near her spent frame.

when I came back
Kelly's cheeks were puffed out
another tail-less victim caged under
claws. the smiling eye

I absolutely love it – my cat of 22 just died 6 7 months ago she would have liked Kelly!
