Shoulder to Shoulder

Wearing a military-issue helmet, the helicopter pilot flew over the greening fields. His mind raced like the spooked horse below. He only wished he was home, seated at the table with his wife and kids. The commander gave strict orders to attack the outlying city buildings and structures & to kill any collection of people he met with. He wasn’t about to question why, because he knew that was dangerous for him and his family. He was sad because he had relatives in the very city he was to menace. The explicit orders even included the destruction of schools and hospitals. He usually liked being a soldier and a pilot but was having serious misgivings regarding the present mission. He heard a whooshing noise growing louder and saw the heat-seeking Stinger almost... He just crossed himself...
