Reality Zone

Watching Combat! from the ’60s
everyone expires but the leading roles
falling like flies save for the regulars
who pushed it along from 60 to 64.
The extras were but cannon fodder,

But not Rick & Vic, who hopped
through mortars, tanks, grenades, amid
the rat-tat-tat of Browning automatic rifles—
now and then, for dramatic effect,
the star took a fragment of shrapnel
in the leg or arm
for the team but were back in top form
for the next episode.

You don’t
recover so fast, or at all,
in the head-removing Twilight Zone
of real-life where we all are both
stars & extras.
