I’ve Got a Secret

I’ve Got a Secret

The virtue of another name
has been credited to my account. The judge
and jury have already pronounced the verdict.
My sentence is no longer up for debate
or further deliberation, being now a settled matter.
Sure, rogue prosecutors are constantly trying to
rehash the allegations against me, but
there can be no double jeopardy. Blood has
paid for blood. A life stood proxy for a life.
It is a finished business, a rectified affair.
What was wrong has been put to rights;
Now, my curse is reversed.
I did nothing to deserve this reprieve.
Yet, glad gratitude wells up when I
consider the secret.
