I See a Worm

12 Apr
see a worm,
saw a wriggler
this morning
beached on the frying asphalt
after a night's rain
writhing

but I saw -like God(?)
and asked, why
can't I pause and save
this sentient who tends our soil,
our mother substance?

so plucked up the worm
handed it back
under healing earth
then pondered
can I likewise find
second chance
or squirm to a cinder?
